about

Returning in 2020 with the 3rd and final EP in the series, Angus Younga and GRHYME Productions are set to release “Judgement Day 3,” July 9th, 2020. Production duties are handled by Melbourne-based producer and long time collaborator MixedByJD. Judgement Day 3 moves in a totally different direction sonically from the previous 2 EP’s, with an emphasis on experimental synths, booming 808’s and drum-machinesque claps and snares.

A move to Berlin to continue music studies by MixedByJD left Angus to record vocals at Chess Sound Studios, Melbourne’s most recognisable hip hop studio, with scene veteran Ciecmate behind the boards during sessions. Mixing took place in Berlin while MixedByJD took time during strict COVID lock downs in Germany to work full time on music, releasing several beat tapes and collaboration works whilst finishing Judgement Day 3. Mastering was handled by industry staple Joe Carra at the iconic Crystal Mastering.

Angus serves up plenty of witty wordplay and boastful punchlines, whilst describing pre-COVID lockdown trips to Europe and North America, with extravagant experiences in other states of Aus also detailed over the Caribbean-inspired instrumental of “Tarmac.” “Full Price,” featuring Melbourne grime-icon Hosper aka Velvet Jesus and up and coming Ballarat new gen MC Ginge Mansion, sees all three emcees flex over booming bass kicks while a mysterious synth atmosphere swirls in the background. Several tracks, including the dark, apocalypse-inducing synth atmosphere of “Vapours” see Angus Younga experiment with his flow more and more, ranging from chopped and screwed-like slow flows to dizzying double times. All the while maintaining the high-level of lyricism Younga has set a precedent with in previous releases. “Fear and Loathing On The Western Highway,” sees the Melbourne MC look both introspectively and externally as to reasons behind a chaotic and depressing period of his life living in regional Victoria.

Accompanied by art work from frequent collaborator and crew mate Cax One, and already riding off the impact of lead single “Stopping All Stations,” with an accompanying film clip by Crate Cartel’s Discourse, Judgement Day 3 is the perfect finale to a trilogy of EP’s in the past 12 months from Angus Younga. As the MC has refined his skill and moves from young and hungry to seasoned and fine-tuned, the future looks bright, with upcoming releases to follow including a collaboration project with Royalz entitled “DFOG’s” and a sequel to 2015’s “Don’t Sleep”, the collaborative album with Melbourne producer and Lab Co affiliate BryZone YBP.

about

GRHYME Productions Melbourne, Australia

Whether you think hip hop is evolving or falling apart is purely up to individual perception. In the eyes of Melbourne label GRHYME Productions, it isn’t necessary to dig up the soil and rip apart the foundations of the artform that many pioneers toiled over in order to produce something ‘new’. Improving on something organic doesn’t always require synthesizing it. ... more
